Crypto Prop Firm Rules: What Changes From Forex

· 11 min read

Crypto accounts look like forex accounts with different symbols and are not. The fundamental difference is that the market never closes — which removes the weekend rule and replaces it with a continuous drawdown exposure that forex traders never face.

The structural differences

Crypto accountsForex / CFD accounts
Weekend holdingNot applicable — there is no weekly closeOften restricted, and frequently a rule traders breach by accident
Gap riskContinuous, but with sharp funding-driven and liquidation cascadesConcentrated at the weekly open and around scheduled news
LeverageTypically the lowest of any asset classHighest on majors, lower on crosses and exotics
Overnight fundingA continuous financing charge, materially relevant to holdsSwap applied at the daily rollover
Volatility profileHigh and sustained, including outside traditional sessionsSession-structured, with quiet periods
News exposureEvent-driven rather than scheduled — regulatory, exchange and macroScheduled releases with known times

Why "no weekend rule" is not a free upgrade

Removing the weekend restriction sounds strictly good, and it changes the risk profile rather than reducing it. On a forex account, the weekend is a known closure: you either flatten or you accept a defined gap. On a crypto account, the market is always open, so you are continuously exposed and a drawdown can develop at any hour.

The practical consequences on a prop account:

  • The daily reset still applies, but the market does not pause at it. A position can move through a limit at 3am with no weekend boundary to stop it.
  • Volatility outside your session can consume room while you are asleep. A trader sized for a London-hours forex range may find the same position size untenable overnight in crypto.
  • Liquidation cascade risk. Crypto markets produce rapid, large moves driven by position liquidations rather than by data releases, and a stop may fill well past its level.
  • Continuous funding costs erode a held position in a way a daily swap does not always mirror, and at most firms these charges count against your equity limits.

The rule that replaces the weekend rule

Where a forex firm restricts weekend holding, a crypto firm commonly restricts position size or leverage instead, and may cap exposure during high-volatility periods. The control is the same — bound the firm's exposure — but it is applied to size and leverage rather than to time.

Leverage and sizing on a crypto account

Crypto typically carries the lowest leverage ratio of any asset class a prop firm offers, which reflects the firm's exposure rather than your risk. As with every other asset class, leverage is not the binding constraint — the drawdown limit is.

But crypto changes the arithmetic in one specific way that is easy to miss:

  1. Stop distances are wider in percentage terms. A crypto stop that respects the instrument's normal volatility is a larger fraction of the position than a forex stop.
  2. Wider stops force smaller positions at the same risk per trade, because position size = risk ÷ stop distance.
  3. So the same daily loss limit supports a much smaller position on crypto than on a major FX pair.

Traders moving from forex to crypto commonly keep their forex position sizes and find the account breached within days, because they sized for a stop distance that does not exist in this market. The formula and worked examples are in risk management on a prop account.

Weekend and news rules you still need to check

Even on a crypto account, several conventional rules survive:

  • Weekend restrictions may apply to the non-crypto instruments on the same platform. A firm offering both will apply its forex weekend rule to its forex symbols.
  • News windows still exist for macro events that move crypto — central bank decisions and inflation prints affect digital assets, and firms that restrict news exposure may apply the same window. See news rules.
  • Instrument restrictions apply. A firm may permit BTC and ETH and prohibit smaller altcoins entirely, or restrict them to reduced leverage. See permitted instruments.

Frequently asked questions

Do crypto prop firms have the same rules as forex firms?

The ruleset structure is similar — targets, drawdowns, consistency requirements, payout conditions — but the weekend rule disappears, leverage is lower, and funding costs and volatility are materially different.

Is the weekend rule gone on crypto accounts?

Yes, in the sense that there is no weekly close to hold through. But any non-crypto instruments on the same platform keep their own weekend rules, and firms may apply size or leverage caps instead.

Why is crypto leverage lower?

Because the underlying volatility is higher, so the same nominal leverage produces a larger percentage move. Firms reduce the ratio to keep their exposure comparable to other asset classes.

Can you trade altcoins on a prop account?

Often limited to major pairs like BTC and ETH, with others restricted or omitted. Check the symbol list on a demo rather than the marketing page.

Is crypto prop trading riskier?

The account rules are comparable, but the instrument moves more and the market never pauses. The practical risk is that a position sized for forex volatility is too large for crypto — which is a sizing error rather than a property of the market.

Summary

  • Crypto accounts have no weekly close, so the weekend rule is replaced by continuous exposure.
  • Leverage is typically the lowest of any prop firm asset class.
  • Wider percentage stops force proportionally smaller positions at the same risk.
  • News windows and instrument restrictions still apply, including to non-crypto symbols on the platform.
  • Market never closes — size for the hours you are not watching.
